Fundación MEDINA – Centre of Excellence in Innovative Medicines Research in Andalusia

Established in 2008 in the Health Sciences Technology Park of Granada, Fundación MEDINA is a non-profit research center dedicated to the discovery of new drugs and bioactive compounds from microbial sources. Originating from MSD Spain’s former research center, it builds on more than 50 years of experience in microbial natural products discovery. MEDINA is a reference institution in microbial biotechnology, integrating applied microbiology, natural product chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and bioinformatics.
The center hosts one of Europe’s largest microbial collections (190,000 strains) and a library of over 200,000 natural product extracts for the screening of compounds with pharmaceutical, agricultural, cosmetic, and other biotechnological applications. As part of EU-OPENSCREEN ERIC and the national network ES-OPENSCREEN, MEDINA contributes advanced technological platforms covering microbiology, omics, natural product isolation, high-throughput screening, and early-stage safety and toxicity studies.
MEDINA is an associated member of ASEBIO, the BEAM Alliance, and the Biotechnology Industry Consortium (BIC), fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and international research infrastructures.
